Oakland A's GM Billy Beane would love to have more money to spend on his team.  However, as the executive explained to CSN Bay Area back in spring training, for now he has to live within the means of the organization:  “At the end of the day, having more money to invest is good...But until that point comes, we have to operate very much like a business, where we spend what we have, and no more.” In 2013, Beane has been quite the businessman. His club won 96 games, and locked down the AL West title for a second straight season. The 96 ...
The regular season is over. For the teams that have survived, the real season begins, as the calendar turns to October. The 2013 campaign was very different for the Oakland A's in terms of expectations than was their magical 2012 season.  But in the end, the results were the same: An American League West division title and a date with the powerful Detroit Tigers in the American League Division Series. Like 2012, the A's will again have home-field advantage against the Tigers.  And yes, like 2013, the A's are likely to be underdogs. Oakland doesn't have a megastar like Miguel Cabrera, a pair of ...
For about 12 minutes, the Oakland Raiders seemed to have a pretty good handle on what the Washington Redskins were doing on both sides of the ball. It changed quickly, however, following a critical interception thrown by quarterback Matt Flynn. From that point on, Oakland’s offense had an uneasy feel to it. The defense was only marginally better, and there was another missed field goal from kicker Sebastian Janikowski. It all added up to a 24-14 loss to the Washington Redskins that dropped Oakland to 1-3. Here’s the full roster report card from the game.Begin Slideshow
Darren McFadden of the Oakland Raiders is one of the most gifted running backs in the NFL, but his latest hamstring injury proves once again that he cannot be trusted as a consistent starter in fantasy football. McFadden's talent is undeniable. He's big, explosive and has great balance. He demonstrated his prodigious talent in 2010, when he racked up 1,664 total yards and 10 touchdowns in just 13 games.  Unfortunately for McFadden, his career is plagued by phrases like "just 13 games." McFadden has missed at least three games every season he has been in the league, and after leaving Sunday's game with ...
The Oakland Raiders blew a 14-point first-quarter lead and lost 24-14 to the Washington Redskins to fall to 1-3. The breakdowns were rampant, from an offense that gave up seven sacks and went scoreless over the final 48 minutes to a defense that inexplicably allowed Redskins’ wide receiver Pierre Garcon to score the game-winning touchdown on a quick slant without a defender laying a hand on him. Oakland quarterback Matt Flynn, starting in place of injured Terrelle Pryor, played so poorly he was booed resoundingly throughout the game. Even normally reliable kicker Sebastian Janikowski had an off day when he pulled a 52-yard ...
Take a good look at the teams that are either in the Major League Baseball playoffs or on the verge of the playoffs in 2013. They all fit into two categories: Either they spend a lot for their talent, or they've built a roster of young draft picks (fifth round or higher) who have come to fruition on the field. Baseball has become a sport of one or the other. Here are the teams with big-money rosters that have reached the postseason or are in contention at the wire (numbers courtesy of USA Today): Los Angeles Dodgers: $216.6 million Boston Red Sox: $150.7 ...
The Washington Redskins traveled West and defeated the Oakland Raiders 24-14 in a Week 4 showdown. Game Analysis for the Oakland Raiders Pass Offense: Flynn’s performance was atrocious. He finished 21-of-32 for 227 yards, one touchdown and one interception. However, the interception went for a pick-six. Flynn was also sacked seven times. Rod Streater, who is arguably Oakland’s best receiver, finished with two grabs for 18 yards. It is painfully obvious to Raiders fans that the players believe in Pryor. The same cannot be said for Flynn. Run Offense: Neither McFadden nor Reece were available in the second half for the Raiders. Backup running back Rashad Jennings managed ...
Last year, the Oakland A's were thrilled just to be taking part in October baseball. This year, however, the expectations have changed altogether for the back-to-back American League West champs. As manager Bob Melvin explained to Jane Lee of MLB.com: “We've got some unfinished business.”  To take care of that business, though, Oakland will have to take down some of the top clubs in all of baseball. So, the question is this: Which team would be the toughest potential matchup for the A's in the postseason? There are many contenders, and on the surface no clear answer. The tricky part about making postseason predictions is ...
