FINAL DETROIT TIGERS 5-4 OAKLAND A'S Though they almost lost to an A's comeback in the ninth inning, where Oakland scored two runs, Tigers' pitcher Joe Nathan held on to the lead and helped end the game leaving the score 5-4. They have now won three of their last 10 games, and the Tigers should feel fairly confident when they head to Seattle to take on the Mariners, who are fourth in the AL Western Division. The Tigers ended up splitting the series with the A's 2-2, and retain their lead in the AL Central Division.Read more Oakland Athletics news on BleacherReport.com
The Oakland Raiders began their first batch of organized team activities on May 27. Are the Raiders concerned with Matt Schaub's shaky start to workouts? Can they count on last year's first-round pick, cornerback D.J. Hayden, taking the next step in his development in 2014? Watch as Adam Lefkoe and the San Francisco Chronicle's Vic Tafur discuss the Raiders' OTAs in the video above.Read more Oakland Raiders news on BleacherReport.com
Between last week's look at disappointing prospects and the upcoming amateur draft on June 5, it seems appropriate to look back at the Oakland Athletics' last decade's worth of first-round picks. Take one look at the names in order and you'll notice something: The A's didn't do so well in the early goings. OK, you'll notice one more thing: The A's really nailed it in the last few years. From Landon Powell to Billy McKinney, we'll check in on the last nine first-round picks. This group has literally everything in it. There's an ace among them, as well as the textbook definition of a ...
Calling quarterback Matt Schaub’s 2013 season a down year would be like calling the atomic bomb a weapon of some destruction. Schaub had a year so putrid the team he pulled out of the basement seven years ago benched him in favor of undrafted rookie Case Keenum—so much for loyalty. The Houston Texans shipped Schaub to the Oakland Raiders for a sixth-round draft pick and will go into the 2014 season with the quartet of Ryan Fitzpatrick, Tom Savage, T.J. Yates and Keenum competing for the starting job. It’s as if the Texans thought any quarterback would be better than Schaub, ...
The Oakland Raiders have been among the NFL’s busiest teams this offseason, and they could see some significant improvement in the 2014 campaign as a result. The proven veterans added to the roster will help quite a bit, but there are a number of players that we can consider breakout candidates to contribute as well. Of course, that given player’s own talent plays the biggest role in which will make the biggest leap, but their supporting casts can quite often be an important factor as well. Here are five Raiders players poised for a breakout campaign this season.Begin Slideshow
The running back spot will make for one of the more interesting position battles of the Oakland Raiders’ 2014 training camp. Some will argue the position is losing its value in a pass-dominated league, but the recent success of teams like the Seattle Seahawks and San Francisco 49ers says otherwise. With the upgrades in talent and size on the offensive line, it is no secret the Raiders will look to take after the those two perennial contenders and plan to run the ball in the upcoming season and beyond. The Raiders’ final roster will have quite a bit of talent at the running ...
The Oakland Athletics are in first place in the AL West through a little more than a quarter of the season. The Athletics have won the division the past two years, but is this the year they finally go deep into the playoffs? The A's lost two key pitchers early in the season in A.J. Griffin and Jarrod Parker, but had a great free-agent signing in Scott Kazmir. If the A's pitching staff can keep it up, expect to see Bob Melvin and Billy Beane's club go deep in the playoffs.  Check out Scott Miller break down the secret to the Athletics' ...
The Oakland A's designated Daric Barton for assignment on May 15, eventually shifting him back to Triple-A. This made many fans happy. Why? Because the first baseman of the future back in 2004 never lived up to that status. But he's not alone. Like any team, the A's have had some letdowns when it comes to promising prospects who failed to live up to the hype. Going back through rosters and stat sheets, there are quite a few names that could be included. For these purposes, we'll stick with the first handful or two dating back to the turn of this century. So ...
The Oakland Raiders are just starting the reconstruction phase of their rebuild. After two grueling years of roster deconstruction, general manager Reggie McKenzie finally had the resources to make significant improvements in 2014. That’s why losing two key young trench players in free agency was a peculiar start. One of the most common rebuild philosophies is the approach that starts with addressing the lines on both sides of the ball, so losing defensive end Lamarr Houston and left tackle Jared Veldheer seemed like a huge blow. Improvements on the offensive and defensive lines in 2014 may hold the key to Oakland’s turnaround. ...
Heading into 2014 after a busy offseason, the Oakland Raiders roster has a completely different look to it overall.  General manager Reggie McKenzie and his staff led the team to a largely successful free-agency period, followed by a solid draft that just may have landed them several instant-impact players as well.  With so many new faces, competition for starting roles as well as roster spots will be held throughout training camp and the preseason, ideally bringing out the best in all involved.  The most heated battles should come at several positions the Raiders staff made a priority to improve throughout this offseason.   Offensive Line The offensive ...
