Either we've all fallen through the looking glass into some bizarre parallel universe like an old Star Trek episode or the culture in the Oakland Raiders front office really is changing because the Raiders once again made a shrewd personnel move on Friday, acquiring running back Mike Goodson in a trade with the Carolina Panthers.Goodson, who barely played in 2011, but rushed for 452 yards in 2010 (including three starts) was acquired in exchange for reserve offensive tackle Bruce Campbell, and the 24-year-old fourth-year pro broke the news of the deal himself on Twitter. Recently, I watched a video of Tyvon Branch's 2011 season highlights and I got to thinking: Tyvon Branch is so good, yet so undervalued by the NFL. Then that thought flew to another—our entire team is undervalued. Then it got to the question, who is the Raiders' most valuable player?I got out pen and paper and began to trim it down to the absolute best. But this idea shot into my head —what if I wrote about it on Bleacher Report and made a tournament of it? I could break it into two parts, one for offense and one for ...
After a period of down time regarding free agency and roster moves, the Raiders front office came back to life, with two fairly significant roster moves late this afternoon. One trade and one free-agent signing, with both solving and creating potential problems for the Raiders and their roster.First, word came out of Oakland of Reggie Mckenzie's first trade as the Raiders GM, shipping the raw, physical RG Bruce Campbell to the Carolina Panthers for the intriguing RB Mike Goodson.Campbell, an H-W-S physical freak, showed good raw potential when he was drafted in 2010; however, he had very little time ...
The Raiders added to their thin linebacker corps with the free agent signing of outside linebacker Philip Wheeler, Friday. Wheeler is projected to immediately start alongside Aaron Curry and Rolando McClain in a base 4-3 defense.Last season, Wheeler played in 13 games and had 80 total tackles and a sack. As it stands, he would be Kamerion Wimbley's replacement on the strong side. While Wheeler is not the pass-rusher Wimbley is, he plays the run better. Wheeler's deal is for one year with the salary undisclosed.Earlier in the day, the Raiders acquired running back Mike Goodson from the Carolina Panthers ...
While the rest of Major League Baseball has a bit more leeway to begin their seasons, the Oakland Athletics already have two games under their belts. After a short two-game series in Tokyo, Japan, the team gained a brief glimpse at what lies ahead for them for the remainder of the season. Oakland will resume its spring training alongside the rest of the MLB. This gives them some time to continue evaluating its players and candidates to fill out their roster for the remainder of the season. During the next couple of days, the A’s will be able iron out ...
Strike another blow for Twitter as the definitive source for breaking football news. Today, running back Mike Goodson showed up to tell his followers that he had been traded to the Oakland Raiders Newest Oakland Raider !!!!!Headin to Cali! — Mike Goodson (@GoodNplenty33) March 30, 2012  Less than an hour later, the Panthers confirmed the trade on Twitter and passed along the compensation: The #Panthers have traded RB Mike Goodson to the #Raiders in exchange for OT Bruce Campbell.— Carolina Panthers (@Panthers) March 30, 2012  Goodson and Campbell are both excellent physical talents. Campbell had a ridiculous combine in 2010, and Goodson's all-around numbers ...
The Oakland Raiders gained three additional draft picks in the 2012 NFL draft: A third-round, fourth-round and fifth-round selection were awarded for free-agent losses last offseason. The selections are believed to be for the losses of Nnamdi Asomugha, Zach Miller and Robert Gallery. The compensatory draft selections can't be traded, but will give new Raiders' general manager Reggie McKenzie more opportunity to shape the roster with young playersMcKenzie recently had a conference call with local media and said:...when you set the board you try to set it to where you can have some possible starters through the fifth round... I want to ...
Playing the bulk of their games against the Mariners, Royals, Indians, White Sox and Orioles in the first month of the season, there's actually a pretty decent chance that the A's go into May in first place.  Every season, a team comes out of nowhere to surprise everyone, pushing more highly-favored teams for a playoff spot.  Last year, for example, it was the Pittsburgh Pirates, Cleveland Indians and Arizona Diamondbacks.Few teams, however, are able to sustain their success over a full 162-game schedule, like the Pirates and Indians last year, both of whom faltered late in the season.  The Diamondbacks, ...
If a quarterback is always standing before a microphone or in too many interviews with the media, does it cause a distraction from his focus on studying the play book and preparing for the 2012 season?Lately, there is so much attention being put on Peyton Manning and Tim Tebow. One wonders if this attention is a distraction, causing the NFL players to loose focus of why they playing football.Let's compare the first two years of NFL performance for Manning, Tebow and Carson Palmer. Here is a graph:  As you peruse the data, you see that both Palmer and Manning increased in ...
Just like the 2012 opener, Game 2 was a pitching duel inside of the spacious Tokyo Dome. And like the opener, the Oakland Athletics looked like they were on the frustrating end of another well-pitched game. But Yoenis Cespedes hit a two-run home run to propel a three-run seventh to lift the A's to a 4-1 victory.Bartolo Colon followed up Brandon McCarthy's start with a superb start of his own. Over eight strong innings, Colon held Seattle to three hits and only issued one walk while striking out six. His only mistake was a leadoff opposite-field home run allowed to Mariners ...
