Taylor Mays reached an agreement with the Oakland Raiders on Wednesday, the team announced. It's the safety's third stop since March, having been previously signed and released by the Minnesota Vikings and Detroit Lions. Ian Rapoport of the NFL Network first reported the defender's latest stop. He noted Mays will be reunited with defensive coordinator Ken Norton Jr., who he worked with during his time at USC. Mays carried a lot of hype coming out of college as a prospect with tremendous physical attributes who could develop into a high-impact defender, either as a safety or linebacker. In turn, the San Francisco 49ers took ...
Here’s the final report on a series of findings outlining the ups and downs in the first half of the Oakland Raiders preseason. We’ve examined the disappointments and the pleasant surprises, and now it’s time for stock reports on five different players. Many readers have asked about the status of certain players who didn’t appear in the two previous reports. Some of the following players have played well, but they didn’t register as a surprise, personally. And some players haven’t played well, but only due to a lack of opportunities via play-calling or depth-chart positioning. A pair of Raider Nation fan favorites made this list, but they’re ...
We previously discussed some of the Oakland Raiders' biggest disappointments, but who stood out most of the unexpected? Wide receiver Amari Cooper and Khalil Mack’s transitions to defensive end obviously provide sources of excitement, but let’s dig a little deeper. The Raiders have several players who made strides once the competition reached a new level outside of their own teammates. The fierce competition instilled by the coaching staff helped push inconspicuous players to the forefront with half of the preseason in the books. A journeyman veteran, a pair of rookies and two players buried on the Raiders roster should’ve caught your eye over past ...
Following an inspiring performance to open up the preseason, the Oakland Raiders were hoping to continue to build momentum against the Minnesota Vikings. Unfortunately, the second preseason game resulted in a much less promising overall performance. The game, which took more than four hours to complete, lacked rhythm thanks in large part to a delay of about an hour due to lighting. It also didn't help that halftime was shortened to two minutes (literally) to try to make up for the lost time. The end result for Oakland was a sputtering performance that ended in a 20-12 loss. With the deadline for the ...
We’re a few months away from the holiday season, but two preseason games revealed some gems and some lumps of coal on the Oakland Raiders roster. The team has shown major improvement from top to bottom, but that comes with some disappointments along the way. A handful of players with high expectations left an empty feeling in the stomachs of Raiders fans due to poor performances and injuries. An integral part of building a championship team involves holding players accountable and availability.  The commitment to excellence only bears part of the deal. Execution leading to production yields the results. Through two games, five particular ...
The Oakland Raiders' play matched the sloppy weather conditions in Minnesota on Saturday night, as the team exhibited poor execution in every phase of its game against the Vikings. Head coach Jack Del Rio had been preaching about physical but mentally grounded football. Neither of those two adjectives applied to the Raiders, who racked up 13 penalties for 106 yards in the 20-12 loss. Flashes of hope flickered through the rough patches, but the totality of the contest triggered some concern for a couple of players who failed to show up or show improvement. We’ll break down Oakland’s second preseason matchup in three ...
For the Oakland Raiders, the preseason opener was an opportunity for everyone to get their feet wet. The starters saw some time, but not much. After that, everyone one else in uniform had some opportunities to try to make a good impression. It was basically a trial run for the entire team. But in the second game, the stakes are going to be much higher for everyone. Now that the coaches have had an opportunity to see the players in action against an actual opponent, it's time to start making some tough decisions. The Raiders have to pare down the roster from ...
The Oakland Raiders wrapped up their final training camp practice in Napa, California, before heading back to their new facilities in Alameda for the remainder of 2015. Three weeks of camp shed light on some questionable areas but also brought forth more questions due to the competitive nature instilled by the coaching staff. The new coaching staff made it clear deeds done in 2014 wouldn’t solidify placement at prominent positions in the upcoming season. The lingering questions left unanswered will be addressed in the remaining preseason games, starting with the Minnesota Vikings on Saturday. You can check out the hype surrounding that Week 2 ...
The Oakland Raiders added a big-time offensive weapon in Amari Cooper and have high expectations heading into 2015.  Will they contend for a playoff spot? The Oakland Raiders' preseason opener provided plenty of positives for the team as it continues to develop and improve. One of the most important was the surprisingly strong performance by several of the reserves. The Raiders are in an intriguing position. They have more talent across the entire roster than they've had in a long time, and they also have several starting positions that are unsettled. This means that for several players who have been considered locks to be reserves up until now, they have a real opportunity to work their way into the starting lineup. It's going to take more than a ...
