If you think your job is hard, consider the working conditions of an assistant football coach. It's not easy. The pay is above-average; not great unless you are a coordinator. The work hours are brutal, 12-14 hours per day, seven days per week during the football season. It's fun, when the team is winning. It's not so fun when the team is losing. There is no stability. Coaches get three years to make a losing franchise a winner. Every three years, your entire family could be moving. Some situations are more stable at the top, but they don't hesitate to use ...
Throttling the Toronto Blue Jays 16-0 on Wednesday does not necessarily mean the Oakland A's are legitimate playoff contenders. They've been making that case for the past month. If the season ended today, they would be in the top three in ERA, but second-to-last in batting average.Besides Yoenis Cespedes and Josh Reddick and the numerous walk-off victories, how have the A's stayed in contention?Bob Melvin.Melvin has led the A's to being nine games over .500 and just five games behind the Texas Rangers in the AL West. That's stunning.Bob Geren would be trying to figure out how the A's are winning if he was still ...
The reason the Oakland A's are having such a great time this season is simple. It all comes down to a brilliant moment in the art house film, Weekend at Bernie's II. Kevin Kaduk (h/t Hot Clicks) of Yahoo Sports reports the team that won nine of the last 10 games and is sitting eight games above .500 has quite the inspiration. Casey Pratt of CSN Bay Area delves deeper into the mystery that is "doing the Bernie."  You may have noticed the weird dance that A's players keep doing. It's called the "Bernie." It's a dance that got started when a rapper known ...
Currently, the Oakland Athletics are one of the most exciting teams in Major League Baseball.Since the beginning of June, the A's are an incredible 30-14—despite having the lowest payroll and one of the worst attendance averages in the league. What's even worse for the Oakland faithful is the current home stadium for the club - O.co Coliseum. When the Athletics moved to California the Coliseum was beautiful, complete with gorgeous views of the East Bay's rolling hills and BART subway system. Now, after the late Al Davis finally got his 50-yard line luxury boxes for Raiders NFL games, the Coliseum is a giant, atrocious bowl of concrete. If ...
Yesterday, the reports were running wild that Miami Marlins shortstop Hanley Ramirez could be traded to the Oakland A's, but today, the reports are that he is officially an L.A. Dodger.  Even though the A's were left out of the trade, they are the top beneficiary of the trade between the Marlins and Dodgers. The Marlins are giving up on the 2012 season and slashing their payroll to clear money for next year. Hanley Ramirez has a price tag of about $7 million left this year followed by $15.5 million and $16 million in 2013 and 2014.For the A's, Ramirez would ...
There has been a lot of talk in New York about the possibility of Tim Tebow and Mark Sanchez sharing the role of starting quarterback for the Jets because of their different styles of play, with Sanchez as the pocket passer and Tebow as the threat to run. That got me thinking; would that work with Carson Palmer and Terrelle Pryor?Dennis Allen and Jason Tarver are bringing many changes to the Raiders' defense, that much we know.  But is Greg Knapp planning any more changes to the offense other than his West Coast playbook and change to zone-blocking?I think that if ...
Yowza! The red hot Oakland Athletics have been grabbing national headlines of late after their dramatic sweep of the New York Yankees and posting an impeccable 15-2 record through the month of July. The A's are hitting on all (or most) cylinders, and have emerged as a considerable threat to steal a playoff berth in the American league, sitting atop the Wild Card standings and just five games out of first place in the AL West behind the Rangers. However, the Athletics still have almost half a season to play and with the trade deadline fast approaching, they will need to ...
If I were to tell you at the beginning of the season that the Oakland Athletics would be one of the most exciting teams in baseball and in the hunt for a wild-card spot, you probably wouldn't have believed me. It's time to believe. The A's are playing solid baseball right now and find themselves six games back in the AL West behind only the Texas Rangers. It's going to be difficult catching the Rangers for the division title, but if the A's continue to play this brand of baseball, the postseason is highly plausible. Jump on the bandwagon before it's too ...
While the Chiefs, Chargers and Broncos have stirred up much of the AFC West’s publicity this offseason,  the Oakland Raiders have more or less trickled out of sight and out of mind. With no space available in their sticky cap situation and no first- and second-round draft selections at their expanse, the 2012 offseason has hit them like a ton of bricks.  With a few necessary tweaks to replace the sputtering tail end of their 2011 season, the Raiders may have very well been sitting in the driver’s seat in 2012.   Unfortunately, they were forced to release some solid production ...
One of the most intriguing position battles in Oakland is at tight end. Tight end is a position in transition in Oakland after the Raiders decided not to re-sign Zach Miller last year. In what was probably an overreaction to losing Miller, the Raiders signed the only remaining veteran tight end available. Kevin Boss parlayed the demand for his services into an above-market contract and Reggie McKenzie, looking to clear salary cap space, released Boss this offseason. In 2012, veteran Brandon Myers is trying hold-off sophomore tight ends David Ausberry and Richard Gordon for the starting job. Thanks to the management ...
