I need to start off this sleeper with a bit of a disclaimer, or caveat if you will. Unlike other fantasy baseball sleeper players I’ve written about, like Freddie Freeman and Sean Rodriguez, who are young players fresh off the farm looking for their breakout season, Barton has for the most part established himself as a useful player in the league but managed to do so in extreme under-the-radar fashion. At the same time, despite being more established than the guys I just mentioned, Barton is an even deeper sleeper because playing with Oakland gets him little media coverage, and to go ...
The Oakland Raiders' Bleacher Report team page is more than a place of "fussing and fighting" over who is the best player, coach or team. It is also about educating young people to think, write and to have a voice. It also gives them a chance to use words, statistics, and their love and knowledge of sports to make good decisions. On April 1, 2010, the Mathematical Association of America and other math groups celebrated Mathematics Awareness Month. The theme in 2010 was "Sports and Mathematics." A BR senior writer is flanked by college students who have read many of the articles written on the Bleacher Report ...

Recent mail contained a reminder to renew my membership to the Insider's Club of the Pro Football Hall of Fame in Canton, Ohio. I joined the club because I plan to make regular visits to the Hall of Fame to continue doing research on the Oakland Raiders and the NFL. Last year’s reminder contained a colorful and informative brochure with pictures of the seven men who will be inducted in the 2010 ceremony. It was good to see Jerry Rice on the list since he was an Oakland Raider from 2001 to 2004. Most of all he played in Super Bowl ...
When the Oakland Raiders first traded their 2011 first-round draft pick to the New England Patriots for Richard Seymour, many people were skeptical. Not of Seymour, who has been one of the best defensive lineman year in and year out throughout the past decade. Nor of what the Raiders gave up, as it wasn't unreasonable and the Raiders had recently not done well with their first-round picks anyhow. No, people speculated, especially after Seymour went silent and didn't report immediately after the trade, that the perennial Pro Bowler and three-time Super Bowl champion had no desire to play for what was widely ...
With Cliff Lee bolting to Philadelphia and the National League, Zack Greinke and Shaun Marcum being traded to Milwaukee, Matt Garza traded to the Cubs and Andy Pettitte retiring, the American League has seen several teams take a step back in their pitching strength heading into 2011.Meanwhile, other teams that leaned on young starters in 2010 will look for their pitchers to build on their experiences from last season, make adjustments, and turn in improved performances in 2011.All four teams in the American League West ranked in the upper half of the American League pitching rotations. The Rangers were able ...
How many Oakland Raiders have the helmet with a computer in it? It just might be a good idea for the Oakland Raiders to make sure each and every player has one. It could provide data on head injuries, no matter how subtle or severe. An NFL player does not have to guess about the number of blows to his head as there is now a helmet to help keep track of that data. This B/R writer became aware of the NFL's "smart" Riddell helmet after listening to the presentation of the Pro Football Hall of Fame's guide, pictured above. The helmet is loaded with ...
It was only a few months ago that fans around the Raidernation were frustrated at the firing of 8-8 head coach Tom Cable. Tom Cable had contributed in pulling the Oakland Raiders out of a decade long slump with a useless JaMarcus Russell and a tough fighter in QB Bruce Gradkowski. By bringing in Jason Campbell from the Washington Redskins, Tom Cable was able to get an even 8-8 record for the Oakland Raiders. Then Tom Cable was released and for many, it was frustrating in part because even Oakland players such as Shane Lechler and Robert Gallery expressed their frustrations. Yet, the ...
Sebastian Janikowski had a difficult day during the Raiders-Cardinals game on Sept. 26th. One bad day, however, should not overshadow the outstanding performance of a player. In honor of George Blanda and in an effort to encourage Sebastian Janikowski, this article was posted. Janikowski and the Raider Nation will always remember that his kick could have helped win the game on Sept. 26th, had been accurate. That failure occurred one day before the departure of one of the NFL's greatest kickers, George Blanda. The timing of both events may burn in the memories of many in the Raider Nation. It, too, may burn in the mind ...
Early in this offseason, Al Davis has already made a lot of changes to the Oakland Raiders' coaching staff in an attempt to find the combination that will bring the Raiders back to the top of the NFL heap. The resigning of Richard Seymour to a multi-year deal, bringing back an old friend in Chuck Bresnahan to coach the defense and hiring a legend like Rod Woodson to coach the cornerbacks are all positive steps toward achieving the team goals. That said, a lot of holes remain, both in terms of talent and coaching for the Raiders to become what they really ...
